Mitchelstown's name originates from an Anglo-Norman family called "de St Michel" who founded a settlement there in the 13th century known as "Villa Michel". Mitchelstown is in the heart of the fertile Golden Vale and has long enjoyed the reputation as 'The Home of Good Food'. The natural assests and strategic qualities of the Mitchelstown area, such as its landscape, its attractive and unique 19th Century architecturally planned townscape gives tourists to Mitchelstown a wonderful and diverse holiday experience. Set against the majestic backdrop of the Ballyhoura Mountains to the west and Galtees to the north-west. The Mitchelstown Caves are limestone caves located on the R639 between Mitchelstown and Cahir. One cave, Mitchelstown Cave itself, is privately owned and has been developed as a show cave, with a number of caverns open to the public through a guided tour. Some of the speleothems are noteworthy including the Tower of Babel formation. Various other stalactites, stalagmites and rock formations are also named and famous for their unique and impressive structure. Mitchelstown offers: beautiful walking trails, horse riding, fishing, mountain-biking and golf. Mitchelstown also hosts the Good Food Festival, the festival of the Galtees and the Mitchelstown Music Festival.
