Northern Ireland’s golfing pedigree is elite. World-class links such as Portstewart and championship parklands like Galgorm Castle see to that. Even the sport’s most illustrious competition tees off on these rugged shores; Royal Portrush hosted The Open Championship in 2019 and will do so again in 2025. Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell are local heroes. Rory McIlroy is tearing it up on tour right now, but it’s on rolling fairways along the Causeway Coast and undulating greens near Belfast where he honed his world-beating skills over many years. In this land of golfing greatness, even the lesser-known courses are top quality. Here are 10 of the best to test your form...

Ardfglass Golf Course - Body Ardfglass Golf Course - Body

    Ardglass Golf Club, County Down

    1. Ardglass Golf Club, County Down

Just a 30-minute drive from the world-renowned Royal County Down is a links no less spectacular. Ardglass Golf Club hugs the coast like few other courses on the island, with the Irish Sea visible from ALL 18 tees and greens. It’s a historic club, too, with the oldest clubhouse in the world, dating back to 1405! First built as a fortified warehouse, the medieval structure now houses a pro shop, restaurant and bar so the fun can continue to the 19th hole. On the course, there are water hazards aplenty, with the roaring sea coming into play on eight holes. So it’s a stern challenge with gorgeous coastal views, that’s Northern Irish links golf to a tee (no pun intended).

    Templepatrick Golf Club, County Antrim

    2. Templepatrick Golf Club, County Antrim

If you want to start golfing as soon as you land in Northern Ireland, head for Templepatrick Golf Club in County Antrim, which is only a driver and a long iron away (so to speak) from Belfast International Airport. You can stay at DoubleTree by Hilton Belfast Templepatrick, a fine four-star hotel that overlooks the 18-hole course. The action unfolds across 220 acres of park and woodland on the Castle Upton Estate, and at more than 7,000 yards, the well-designed parkland is quite the test. Templepatrick also boasts a driving range, a short game zone and a pro shop, so it really is a one-stop golfing shop par excellence.

Holywood Golf Course Holywood Golf Course

    Holywood Golf Club, Belfast

    3. Holywood Golf Club, Belfast

Fancy a round at Rory McIlroy’s home club? Thought so. Holywood Golf Club is the spot and what a location is it. The picturesque parkland is nestled by the shores of Belfast Lough so gorgeous views are guaranteed as you make your way around the course. Don’t miss the course guide before you play, it comes with a pro tip from Rory himself for every hole. Post-game in the clubhouse, enjoy a meal in Restaurant 1904 and a drink in the Spike Bar or keep swinging in the Simulator Lounge. For a club established over 100 years ago, the course and facilities are chic and modern. It’s an ideal golfing day trip from nearby Belfast.

Roe Park Golf Resort Roe Park Golf Resort

Roe Park Golf Resort, County Londonderry

    4. Roe Park Golf Resort, County Londonderry

For a little luxury alongside the golf, decamp to Roe Park Golf Resort in County Londonderry. This four-star destination boasts an 18-hole course as well as a spa, two restaurants and elegant accommodation. The championship parkland offers stunning views of both Lough Foyle and the Inishowen Peninsula. But that’s not all. Golf enthusiasts can also enjoy a driving range and a short game area, plus there’s a golf shop on the estate. This is a place where you can retreat, relax and luxuriate in a few leisurely rounds of golf while also make the most of the other splendid facilities available. Golfing bliss awaits.

Colin Glen Golf Colin Glen Golf

    Colin Glen Golf, Belfast

    5. Colin Glen Golf, Belfast

If you want to get a few holes in on a trip to Belfast, Colin Glen Golf is the place to do so. The short 9-hole course on the outskirts of the city can be played in just a few hours, but it’s still quite the challenge with bunkers, water features and par threes, fours and fives all featuring. And if the weather is against you on the day, head inside to Northern Ireland’s first TrackMan Driving Range and Indoor TrackMan Suite, which is programmed with over 100 virtual courses, including local favourites such as Lahinch and Adare Manor. Inside or out, Colin Glen delivers.

Belvoir Park Golf Course Belvoir Park Golf Course

    Belvoir Park Golf Club, Belfast

    6. Belvoir Park Golf Club, Belfast

Another course on the fringes of Belfast is Belvoir Park Golf Club, an 18-hole championship parkland designed by legendary course architect Harry S Colt, the same man who laid out the famous Dunluce Links at Royal Portrush Golf Club. A previous host of The Irish Open, amongst other tournaments, Belvoir bills itself as an “inner city haven” and peace and tranquillity are what you'll find across 163 acres of pretty woodland. The club will celebrate its centenary in 2027 (the same year that Ireland will host the Ryder Cup) and once you strike out onto these glorious fairways, it’ll be easy to see why Belvoir has stood the test of time in such a competitive golfing landscape.

Ballycastle Golf Club Ballycastle Golf Club

    Ballycastle Golf Club, County Antrim

    7. Ballycastle Golf Club, County Antrim

The elemental Causeway Coast is home to a number of world-leading links courses, but a lesser-spotted gem for the golfing connoisseur to seek out is Ballycastle Golf Club in County Antrim. Founded in 1890, Ballycastle’s hilltop setting has been providing epic views to golfers for well over 100 years. From Rathlin Island and the Glens of Antrim to even the shores of Scotland of a clear and fine day, the landscapes on show are spectacular. As for the course, it’s a wonderful mix of undulating greens, sand dunes and coastal hills that’s fun and challenging in equal measure.

Manor House Marine Golf Course Manor House Marine Golf Course

Manor House Marine Golf Course, County Fermanagh

    8. Manor House Marine Golf Course, County Fermanagh

The shimmering beauty of the Fermanagh Lakelands is the idyllic setting for Manor House Marine Golf Course, a short 9-hole blast at Manor House Marine and Cottages by the shores of Lower Lough Erne. The five-star Lough Erne Golf Resort is on the other side of the lake, but if it’s hidden gems you’re after, Manor House fits the bill. At 1,709 yards, the course is short but sweet, all pars threes and fours, so ideal for casual golfers. With buzzy Enniskillen town and the water wonderland of Upper Lough Erne nearby, County Fermanagh’s full array of charms are ready and waiting to be explored.

Malone Golf Course Malone Golf Course

    Malone Golf Club, Belfast

    9. Malone Golf Club, Belfast

An impressive 20-acre lake is the centrepiece of Malone Golf Club. If it’s hole after hole of golfing action you’re craving, there are 27 of them here to enjoy. Founded in 1895, golf greats such as Gary Player have played here down through the decades. The course is split into three nine-hole sections: Drumbridge, Ballydrain and Edenderry. Mature trees dot the fairways throughout, and of course, watch out for water hazards from that glistening lake. The Club shop is a good place to pick up a memento of your visit to what is often considered to be one of the finest parkland courses on the island of Ireland.

Shandon Park Golf Course Shandon Park Golf Course

    Shandon Park Golf Club, Belfast

    10. Shandon Park Golf Club, Belfast

The leafy suburbs of east Belfast is the scenic location for Shandon Park Golf Club. If your putter is hot, this is the course to play as it’s considered to have some of the best greens going. The sculpted parkland holes provide fine views of Belfast city and Stormont Estate. As is the norm with golf clubs in Northern Ireland, Shandon has a great history behind it, dating back to 1898. Legendary Irish golfer Christy O’Connor drained a few putts here over the years. After your round, dine and drink in the clubhouse, which has an extensive bistro menu and a top wine list. And with that, we’ll cheers to all of the courses on the list! The secret’s out about hidden gem golf courses in Northern Ireland...
