Taking five days to complete and moderate in grade, The Western Way - Mayo trail connects the village of Leenaun to Ballycastle in the north of the county. A stunning stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way, this 124km route traverses tarmac road, forestry tracks and moorland paths. The aggregate ascent is about 1,350m but there are no significant climbs. Expect spectacular views of the county’s famous holy mountain, Croagh Patrick, and breathtaking vistas northward over Clew Bay’s sprinkling of islands. This rewarding trail passes through the towns of Westport and Newport, ideal for a pitstop, and passes placid Lough Feeagh en route to more remote peatland stretches. These are bordered on the west by the captivating Nephin Beg mountain range. After the wilder legs through Bellacorick and Sheskin, the route descends towards Ballycastle with the sight of the Atlantic as your guide. On this trail Leenaun, Westport, Newport and Ballycastle are the best locations for overnight accommodation.
