Dick Mack’s is more than just a pub, it's an institution. Located in the town of Dingle in County Kerry, along the Wild Atlantic Way, it started as a bar and leather shop in 1899, and is still going strong today. The MacDonnell family has owned the pub for four generations, with the fourth generation, Finn MacDonnell now running the show. And, get this: his uncle, Oliver MacDonnell, was born in a room above the pub and lived there for his whole life.

Dick Mack's snug, Dingle
The pub has been open since 1899 by Tom MacDonnell. Tom thought that those travelling to Dingle may need leather work done, and the pub still shares its premises with a leather shop. Customers can pull up a stool and wait for their goods to be made.
While in Dick Mack’s, you won’t run out of whiskeys to choose from. They stock over 250 whiskeys, including impressive Irish whiskeys like Midleton Pearl, which you’ll need deep pockets to even think about trying! More recently, the pub opened a brewhouse and has created its own beer called Dick Mack’s IPA, which you can only get in Dingle.

Dunmore Head & Blasket Islands, Dingle Peninsula
But even before you step through the door, you’ll be walking with the stars. Richard “Dick” MacDonnell, the eponymous Dick Mack, created a “Walk of Fame” in front of the pub. It represents all the stars who had visited Dick Mack’s when the film Ryan’s Daughter brought Robert Mitchum to the peninsula in 1968.
Other familiar names you may stumble across are Tom Crean, an Antarctic explorer from Kerry, and even Dolly Parton! Sure where else would you get it, as we like to say.
But, of course, the adventure doesn’t stop there. Dingle, and the Dingle Peninsula on which it sits, is an amazing place with everything from great seafood restaurants to ancient monuments. There’s nothing but exceptional beauty here, including the Conor Pass, the highest mountain road in Ireland, and Coumeenoole Beach, with its views of the Blasket Islands and its soft, golden sand.
The buzz and friendliness of Dingle town makes it easy to never leave, but if you do explore the rest of the peninsula, you’ll be well rewarded!
Keep exploring
