Robert Emmet Statue

This life size statue of Robert Emmet was designed in 1916 by Jerome Connor, an artist originally from Annascaul, County Kerry, who emigrated to America and became a famous sculptor. The bronze statue that stands in St Stephens Green was unveiled in 1968 from a cast of the original statue in Washington D.C. Positioned directly across from where Robert was born, it portrays the Irish nationalist and republican in the pose of an orator and dressed in the costume of his day. He led the failed United Irishmen rebellion in 1803 and paid the ultimate price. Some of the lines from his famous "Speech from the Dock" are written on one side of the plinth upon which the statue rests.
